Meet Captain W. Michael Crabbs

Captain W. Michael Crabbs has served with the Harford County Sheriff’s Office since March 14, 1994. Prior to joining Harford Sheriff, Captain Crabbs served with the Baltimore County Police Department from 1973 to 1994, where he worked in various units to include Criminal Investigation Division, Sex Crimes / Domestic Violence Unit and Homicide Unit.

In August 2018, Captain Crabbs was selected to command the Special Investigations Division’s Harford County Narcotics Task Force (HCNTF). The elite HCNTF consists of a local multi-agency, Task Force with statewide jurisdiction in Maryland, and has partnered with the United States Department of Justice, Drug Enforcement Administration.

In May 2014, Captain Crabbs was assigned to command the Community Services Division, which consisted of the Community Policing, School Resource Deputy, Crime Analysis/Criminal Intelligence and Animal Control Units. Additionally, (and in the absence of the fulltime commander) Captain Crabbs was tasked with commanding the Northern and Southern Criminal Patrol Divisions when needed.

From 2012 to 2014, Captain Crabbs was the Assistant Commander of the Court Services Division where he managed all aspects of five distinct units within the Court Services Division; which consisted of Domestic Violence Unit, Warrant Unit, Court Security Unit, Civil Process Unit and Office of Child Support and Enforcement (OCSE) Unit.

In February 2011 until March 2012, Captain Crabbs was the Detective Lieutenant and Director of the Family Justice Center of the Criminal Investigation Division, CAC. While assigned he managed a multi-disciplinary team consisting of social workers, prosecutors, clinicians, civilians, including Federal, State and Local multi-agency law enforcement members. Managed all aspect of investigations pertaining to “Crimes Against Children.”

During the period of February 2008 to February 2011, Captain Crabbs was a Detective Lieutenant assigned to the Office of Professional Standards/Internal Affairs. His duties included the overall supervision, coordination and investigation of complaints against all agency personnel, including law enforcement officers, correctional officers and civilians.

From February 2003 to February 2008, Captain Crabbs served as Detective Sergeant of the Major Case Homicide Unit, of the Criminal Investigation Division. He supervised the overall investigations of all major crimes cases which include all part one offenses handled by the Sheriff’s Office.

Captain Crabbs also serves as a member of the Sheriff’s Office Media and Public Relations Team.

Other previous assignments have included Property Crimes Unit, Child Advocacy Center, Crime Prevention / Community Policing Unit, and Commander of the Sheriff’s Office SCUBA Team.

Captain Crabbs has received numerous specialized training courses to include Public Information Officer/Joint Information Planning, MEMA, National Child Abuse Training, Thomas and Means Internal Affairs Training, National Incident Command Training, Homicide Investigation Training, Investigative Surveillance Technology, Certified Rescue Diver 2001- member of Sheriff’s Scuba Team, Graduate of the University of Louisville (Kentucky), National Crime Prevention Institute.

A few of Captain Crabbs' accomplishments include being recognized locally as an expert in the areas of Search and Seizure, the Maryland’s Law Enforcement Officer’s Bill of Rights, Child Abuse, Elder Abuse, and Criminal Investigations.

Current Maryland Police Training and Standards Commission member (Governor’s Appointment).

Current Maryland Police Training and Standards Commission, certified police instructor.

Current participant in Special Olympics, Maryland.

Current participant in HCSO “Badges for Baseball” program.

Supervised the Darrel Guess homicide investigation which was the catalyst for “Gang” Legislation in the State of Maryland.

Honorable Mention for Police Officer of the Year, Maryland Sheriff’s Association.

Received Police Officer of the Year Award from American Legion Post 182.

Nominated for Police Officer of the Year, Baltimore Sun papers.

Received Merit Award 2002, for Sheriff’s Office Annual March of Dimes Motorcycle Ride.

Developed state and county wide SALT Councils, and “911" emergency light program.

Received 2 unit citations for the relentless pursuit of serial sex offenders.

Received Unit Citation for 100% homicide case clearance rate.
