Maria Bowen-Perry, Sergeant (Retired) is a thirty-year (30) veteran of the New Bern Police Department. She worked in the Crime Scene Unit as a Detective and Supervisor in Charge of the Forensic and Evidence Unit which merged under her supervision. She has processed, led or participated in thousands of major crime scenes, forensics and fingerprint Identification during her career which has spanned Three Decades. She also worked in areas such as K-9, High Crime Task Force (flex team), Background Investigations, Field Training Officer, Traffic Enforcement Unit and In-Service (State Certified/North Carolina Justice Academy) Trainer as well as Adjunct Instructor for Basic Law Enforcement Training. She is a qualified expert in the fields of Fingerprint Identification and Crime Scene reconstruction.

Maria received her Forensic training from some of the worlds most renowned experts in the field of Forensics such as: Dr. Henry Lee/Forensic Scientist (O.J. Simpson Trial) and founder of the Henry C. Lee Institute of Forensic Science Affiliated with the University of New Haven and Herbert MacDonnell, Corning New York (Forensic Pioneer /Evidence Expert, Founder of the Bloodstain Evidence Institute and founder of the magna wand (Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr assassinations) . Other training, she received has been from institutes such as: The State Bureau of Investigations, The Federal Bureau of Investigations, North Carolina Justice Academy and International Association for Identification.

Maria is the creator and founder of the Patrol Evidence Technician program which was implemented within her department between 1989-1991. This program is still active today. The program has evolved and currently includes all new officers receiving training in how to process minor crime scene as a method to supplement the Patrol Evidence Technician and Forensic and Evidence Unit Detectives. She implemented the first digital media policy for processing forensic digital media evidence within the department. Maria is proud to say one of her former employees/teammates, Police Service Technician/Evidence Technician Gregory Smith published his first book in 2020 titled “100 Simple Ways to Manage A Successful Property and Evidence Room”.

Maria received her Associates Degree in Business Administration with Honors in 2005 and her Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice Summa Cum Laude in 2006 respectively from American Intercontinental University, Atlanta Georgia.

Maria is a United States Armed Forces Veteran and received an Honorable discharge from the United States Army in February 2000.
