Counseling & Mentoring for Supervisors/Field Training Officers

This seminar is designed specifically for officers and supervisors assigned the task of mentoring a new or underachieving employee or trainee. There are a variety of challenges in ensuring all efforts are undertaken to ensure a productive employee for the agency. This program will consider some of the basic principles and applications that might be utilized in mentoring/counseling employees to enhance their assigned roles. Topics include:

(1) Recognizing employees in need of mentoring before it is too late

(2) Understanding the role of a mentor, including planning, organizing, directing, implementing, and evaluating activities

(3) Overview of effective counseling techniques

(4) Adult learning principles, including the use of auditory, visual, and kinesthetic

(5) Essential skills that mentors must have, which include strong interpersonal skills, team-building abilities, and communication skills

(6) An overview of the proper documentation necessary during the mentoring phase

(7) How to effectively deal with different generations of employees.
