INVESTIGATIVE REPORT WRITING

Focus on the composition and writing of investigative reports. Provides a review of the specifics that reports should contain. Topics include

(1) identification of the essential elements of an investigative report, including the Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How of an incident under investigation

(2) formatting an investigative report for a clear, coherent statement of facts free from inconsistencies or contradictions

(3) applying the appropriate resources available to produce a professional and readable report

(4) properly cross-referencing the investigative report to related statements by interested parties and/or evidence

(5) self-editing reports prior to supervisory review

(6) supporting documents needed to clarify or amplify individual points or statements presented in the investigative report.
