Mentoring New or Underachieving Officers – Jackson Co. Sheriff’s Office

This seminar is designed specifically for officers and supervisors assigned to mentoring a new or underachieving employee or trainee. There are a variety of challenges in ensuring all efforts are undertaken to ensure a productive employee for the agency. This program will consider some basic principles and applications that might be utilized in mentoring/counseling employees to enhance their assigned roles. Topics include:
(1) Recognizing employees needing mentoring before it is too late.
(2) Understanding the role of a mentor, including planning, organizing, directing, implementing, and evaluating activities.
(3) An overview of effective counseling techniques.
(4) Adult learning principles, including using auditory, visual, and kinesthetic.
(5) Essential skills that mentors must have: strong interpersonal skills, team-building abilities, and communication skills.
(6) An overview of proper documentation necessary during the mentoring phase.
(7) How to effectively deal with different generations of employees.
